The Problem: Citizens don't have an easy way to report problems with city facilities or to get status updates regarding when something will be fixed

Suggested Challenge: A citizen reporting mechanism where anyone can report a problem, be it related to waste, sanitation, roads, traffic, etc. The report will need to be forwarded to the correct Government Dept. Ideally, there would be a response back from the Government Dept so that there is feedback to the citizen.

Insights: Consider re-deploying the open source application servicetracker.cityofchicago.org.

Thanks for the link. But that's one part of the solution. People will also submit the problem online. Then they can check about the status on their submission and some other factors.

For the second part, take a look at another open source solution, 311labs.org/experiments/dailybrief (though it appears it is not pulling in data currently).

It's a good idea to reuse the code from open source solutions. However, to update the status (the second part), you will need to link to a Govt database, which might not be easy to do.

yeah that's the problem. Any idea how I can link it to Govt database?? Ofcourse they'll not allow me :D

Perhaps you could just focus on the first part for the hackathon. Also, think about other creative ways to get to the heart of the problem, which may not involve the Govt database.

I'm trying to focus on this problem as well, globally many cities have implemented Open311 standard for such reporting & govt. feedback on these reports.
http://servicetracker.cityofchicago.org also implements Open311, see http://open311.org/ for detail.
